How to remove duplicate NBA games from Google Calendar

If an NBA matchup appears twice in Google Calendar, identify which calendar each copy belongs to before deleting anything. Two visible copies can come from overlapping subscriptions, an old file import alongside a subscription, or separate copies stored in one calendar. Those situations need different fixes.

Start on the Google Calendar website on a computer. The steps below follow Google's desktop help, checked on October 27, 2026. You do not need to give a third-party cleanup tool access to your account to perform these checks.

1. Hide calendars to find the extra copy

Open a duplicated matchup and note the calendar associated with it. Check the other copy too; matching titles and tipoff times alone do not tell you whether both entries belong to the same calendar.

In the left sidebar, find the relevant calendars under My calendars or Other calendars. Click a calendar's name to hide its events, then click it again to show them. Google documents this reversible check in Hide a calendar temporarily.

Hide one basketball calendar at a time and watch the duplicated matchup:

  • One copy disappears: you have isolated one source. Restore it, then hide the other suspected calendar to confirm the overlap.
  • Both copies disappear together: inspect that calendar more closely; hiding it does not establish how the two entries were created.
  • Neither disappears: check the calendar names on the events again rather than removing an unrelated subscription.

Hiding is a display choice, not a cleanup of stored events. It is a useful stopping point if you are unsure which calendar to keep.

2. Check for overlapping league and team subscriptions

The all-NBA feed includes games involving every team. A Boston Celtics feed includes Boston's games. If you display both, the same Boston matchup is represented in both source calendars. Do not assume Google will merge entries across separate calendars.

Two team calendars can overlap too: a game between those teams belongs on both schedules. This is different from the schedule listing two different fixtures.

Choose the coverage you actually want:

  • Every game: keep the league subscription visible and hide unnecessary team calendars.
  • One team: keep that team's subscription and hide the league calendar.
  • Several teams: keep the team calendars you need, but recognize that their head-to-head games overlap. You can also use the interactive NBA calendar to view selected teams without adding another subscription.

Compare an entry with the current team schedule before deciding that its date or time makes it the wrong copy. For a display-time problem rather than duplication, use the time-zone troubleshooting guide.

3. Unsubscribe only from the unwanted subscribed calendar

Once you have confirmed an unnecessary subscription, Google's calendar-removal instructions give this desktop path:

  1. Open Settings, then Settings in Google Calendar.
  2. Select the unwanted calendar in the left column. Check its name carefully.
  3. Select Remove calendar, then Unsubscribe.
  4. Confirm with Remove calendar.

Google distinguishes unsubscribing from a calendar you do not own from deleting a secondary calendar you own. If you see Delete or Delete permanently instead of the expected unsubscribe option, stop and check the calendar's identity and ownership. Deleting a calendar you own can affect people you share it with.

Unsubscribing from an extra feed does not remove separately imported events from your personal calendar.

4. Treat an old ICS import separately

Google's import instructions let you choose the destination calendar and say the primary calendar is the default. If you previously downloaded an .ics file and imported it, the old NBA entries may therefore be mixed with appointments rather than listed as their own subscription.

For copies in a mixed personal calendar, inspect each unwanted event and its calendar before using Google's individual event-deletion instructions. Do not clear all events in your primary calendar to remove basketball games. That is a much broader action and can remove unrelated plans.

If an old import is in a separate calendar used only for that import, hide it first. Consider deleting that secondary calendar only after checking that it contains nothing else you need, including shared events. Do not assume a calendar is disposable because its name contains “NBA.”

5. Keep one intended source and check again

After cleanup, display the calendars you intend to use and check a previously duplicated matchup and a later game. The aim is one visible copy from the source you chose, not merely an empty calendar.

For future setup, follow Add NBA games to Google Calendar and use a subscription URL when you want Google to check the feed for schedule updates. Reimporting a downloaded file is not a reliable way to repair an existing subscription. Google controls subscription refresh timing; adding another copy is not an instant-refresh fix.

Keep the calendar subscriptions page handy if you later want to change from the league feed to a team feed. NBA Calendar can help you choose a schedule, but it cannot inspect or delete events inside your Google account.
